FINAL DAY OF ABU DHABI WORLD YOUTH JIU-JITSU CHAMPIONSHIP SEES STARS OF THE FUTURE SHOW OF THEIR TALENT
- Second and final day of Abu Dhabi World Youth Jiu-Jitsu Championship ends with overwhelming success and sees over 700 promising youth players taking part

Abu Dhabi, UAE, 17 April 2017: The final day of Abu Dhabi World Youth Jiu-Jitsu Championship came to a close today at the IPIC Arena, Zayed Sports City, which is part of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship which runs until April 22, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
The second and final day of Abu Dhabi World Youth Jiu-Jitsu Championship, which was held over two days between 16 – 17 April, saw boys aged between 10 -17 years old take to the mats of the IPIC Arena. The Arena was filled with excitement and cheers which echoed around the Arena, supporting their favourite players who were fighting it out for Championship titles.
Today the Championship saw 400 UAE male players along with 300 international male players from 41 countries battle it out across different weight divisions in the white, grey, yellow, orange, green and blue belts hoping to win glory and the 343 medals available. (103 gold medals, 92 silver and 148 bronze medals).
Today the UAE lead the Abu Dhabi World Youth Jiu-Jitsu Championship medal table with 170 medals (45 gold, 50 silver, 75 bronze). Russia finished second with 35 medal (13 gold, 5 silver, 17 bronze) and Kazakhstan finished in third place with 21 medals (7 gold, 6 silver, 8 bronze). Jordan finished in fourth with 18 medals (4 gold, 6 silver, 8 bronze) and finally Angola finished fifth with 14 medals in total (5 gold, 2 silver, 7 bronze).
After the competition, today Jassim Al Mansoure, the father of two competitors (Mohammed and Seif) who both won gold today said: “I am really happy that my children have the chance to participate in the Abu Dhabi World Youth Jiu-Jitsu Championship and both we able to take home gold in their categories. I help them train every day and we train two hours every day. I believe that the sport is going from strength to strength not only in the UAE but across the world.”
“I would like to thank the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation for all their hard work, not only for putting on a great Championship but for what they do for Jiu-Jitsu, because of them Abu Dhabi is now known as the Capital of Jiu-Jitsu and they have created a new generation of champions. This has really raise the bar for the sport itself.”
It was a very proud moment for Jassim today as both Mohammed and Seif also received their orange belts on the podium today along with their medals.
This part of the two-week world class event, the Abu Dhabi World Youth Jiu-Jitsu Championship, is extremely important to the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation as it sees the stars of the future compete on the world stage which allows them to develop their skills and enhance their techniques. It’s also a stepping stone to the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship where they will have the opportunity to step on the podium and raise the flag for the UAE.
Seventeen-year-old blue belt Abdula Mohammed Shouga from Jordan, who won a gold medal in the 94kg category said: “I have been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for 5 years and this is my 3rd year at the Abu Dhabi World Youth Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Today’s competition was challenging for me but it was also very exciting. Today was a great day for me, I am so happy to have won the gold medal. I would like to wish everyone else competing good luck for the Championship.”
The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation has embraced the Year of Giving and on each day of the Championship is promoting a theme that furthers noble causes. The past day’s themes have included: Health and Fitness, The Challenges of Disability as well as Happiness and Positivity. Today’s theme was “UAE Global National Industry”.
UAE Global National Industry holds a special place in UAE agenda as they have hosted several conferences, most notably the global manufacturing and industrialization summit in March this year, and embraces the work of the whole country on working together to build a better future for humanity and generations to come.
As well as fierce competition on the mat, spectators could take part in activities for the whole family in the IPIC Fan Zone. Everyone was also able to sample the delicious food at the food trucks park, open throughout the Championship. Each day there’s also a draw for one lucky winner to win a return ticket on Etihad Airways which will take them anywhere on the Etihad Airways flight network. Spectators can even enter a draw to win a brand-new car from Premier Motors; a Jaguar XE.
The most anticipated event yet, the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship, will take place from April 18-22 at the IPIC Arena, will kick off tomorrow with national and international media, VIP guest, organisers, sponsors and the sporting elite all in attendance. Millions of Jiu-Jitsu fans across the globe will tune in to the first round of the male and female adults and male masters 1 & 2 finals in blue and purple belts. Over the course of the competition the sport’s elite will compete for the highest honours including international stars Gabriel Arges, Alexandre Ribeiro, Jose Junior and Mackenzie Dern.
Seif Mohammed Al Shoumari, a local player who will participate in the opening day of the Professional Championship said: “Jiu-Jitsu is gaining a lot of attention throughout the UAE at all levels. I have been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for seven years and I am really looking forward to competing in tomorrow’s Championship. This is my second year taking part in the international event and I hope to take home the gold and raise the flag on the podium for the UAE.”
“Over the years’ Jiu-Jitsu has helped me on so many levels and I feel it has improved my health, fitness and ability to concentrate not only in Jiu-Jitsu but I can also see an improvement in my studies.”
Other highlights to come include the Abu Dhabi Legends live weigh-in event which will take place at 7pm Town Square, Yas Mall on 21 April; the return of the Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Legends, an epic clash of Jiu-Jitsu icons such as Kenny Florian, Marcio “Pe de Pano” Cruz and Helio “Soneca” Moreira; plus the Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Awards which recognises the talent of the sport at every level.
